For many, Cuba is synonymous with salsa, rum and of course cigars. Where does this association come from, why is it that when many people with an affinity for pleasure hear the word 'cigars', the first thing that comes to mind is usually Cuba, and what other cigar-producing countries are there? Are Cuban cigars the best? If this last question is on your mind, we have to disappoint you - WE can't answer it, only YOU can do it for yourself. But in the following we would like to give you at least a little information about the different provenances. The best way to find out which cigars are the best for you is to dare to try out the many possibilities - to 'travel' through the different growing regions, so to speak. Have fun and enjoy!<\/p>

Cigars from Cuba<\/h3>

Cuba's reputation for producing the 'best cigars in the world' has several reasons, some of which go back centuries. Cigar consumption was first documented in the logbooks of the famous seafarer Christopher Columbus, who observed smoking natives during the discovery of the New World. At some point, the Europeans brought these luxury foods across the pond and thus to Europe. Cuban cigars were thus at least the first cigars available in Europe - and for a long, long time they were also the only ones.<\/p>

Brands such as Cohiba, Montecristo, Romeo y Julieta and H.Upmann, which are still well-known today, have been around for many decades and during this time there have been many events that have contributed to the reputation of these cigar brands as being the 'best in the world'. Romeo y Julieta, for example, became a sought-after cigar due to the famous former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, especially the 'Churchill' format, which is now named after him due to his preference for this format (before that, this cigar was called 'Clemenceau').
Cohiba is probably the best-known cigar brand in the world and has its prestige not least because of its closely associated history as a state gift, which was only given away by the then Cuban president Fidel Castro. For a long time, this cigar was truly exclusive, as it was not available for purchase, but only as a diplomatic gift, for the production of which, of course, only the best of the good tobaccos from the large Antilles island were used. This special feature and the exclusivity associated with it are still attached to the brand, although they have been available for purchase to 'normal' people without diplomatic status since 1982. Only the best tobaccos from a harvest are still used to make Cohiba cigars, which is why they are also priced in the exclusive range. The same applies to the other premium brand 'Trinidad', which replaced the Cohiba as a state gift and has only been available for free sale since 1998.\u00a0
The history of the 'Montecristo' brand is closely linked to the famous novel 'The Count of Monte Cristo' by Alexandre Dumas. According to the story, this novel was the favourite book of the torcedoras and torcedores (cigar rollers) in one of the cigar factories in Cuba at the time. It is a tradition in these factories that not only daily newspapers but also books are read to them during working hours in order to diversify the working day. That was the birth of the brand.<\/p>

As you can see, the history of Cuban cigars goes back a long way, is still very traditional and still handmade. This is also the reason why Cuban cigars are called 'Totalmente a mano' - 100% longfillers made by hand. And last but not least, there is one factor that cannot be duplicated in any other provenance - the 'terroir'. The climatic and geological conditions in Cuba's main growing region of Pinar del Rio (and especially in the well-known 'Vuelta Abajo' region) are simply so special and, above all, particularly well-suited to tobacco growing that Cuban cigars are simply a very special pleasure experience.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Cigars from Nicaragua<\/h3>

The climatic conditions in Nicaragua are similar to those in Cuba. Regions of the country are therefore also predestined to produce good tobaccos. Historically, Nicaragua does not have such a long tradition in cigar production, but the country was built up into one of the big players in cigar production by Cuban exiles in particular. In the meantime, the country is by far the largest cigar exporter in the world - this is due in particular to the US market, where the import of Cuban products is still prohibited since the embargo imposed by John F. Kennedy. In particular, the Estel\u00ed region in the 'Land of a Thousand Volcanoes' is probably the best known region for the production of premium tobaccos for cigar making. The very mineral soils due to the volcanic rock in combination with the alternating rainy and dry seasons make the region very suitable. Well-known names such as Plasencia, A.J Fernandez or Drew Estate are based there. Cigars from Nicaragua are considered light-medium to full-bodied and offer a fantastic selection for both beginners and advanced cigar smokers.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Cigars from the Dominican Republic<\/h3>

The Caribbean country, which is very popular with holidaymakers, was the world's No. 1 for cigar production for a long time, but was recently knocked off its throne by Nicaragua. The country still produces some of the best cigars in the world. Large, traditional manufacturers such as Davidoff or Arturo Fuente have been based there for many decades. In general, cigars from the 'Dom Rep' are considered rather mild, although stronger blends are now also produced here, such as in the Davidoff Yamasa series.<\/p>

In addition to these three major growing regions, there are also other provenances where cigar tobacco and cigars are produced. These include Brazil, Mexico, Indonesia, Cameroon, the USA, Panama and others. Each of these regions has its justification and special features. None is better or worse than the other, merely different!<\/span> You can only find out which cigars suit you best by trying them.
